Colonial Trade Routes

This map shows a global colonial trade route that heavily involved Mexico’s ability to pass goods across 300 miles of land from its Pacific coast to its Atlantic coast and vice versa. The largest port on Mexico’s Pacific side was Acapulco, which received goods from Asia via Manila and explains a few of the artifacts found at Fuerte San Diego such as this Japanese katana and Chinese coins.
During the early 1800s, the Philippines was a colony of Mexico’s. The Filipinos paid tribute to Mexico who then had to pay their own tax to the crown in Spain.
